The OQ student assistant works as a member of the editorial team of the magazine, which is a unit of University of Oregon Communications. The typical schedule is 7-10 hours per week within business hours (8 am – 5 pm, M-F) to match the student’s class schedule. It’s a paid position ($10/hr) for the entire school year, late September through mid June, with the potential to work over summer months, both in 2017 and 2018. The OQ office is four blocks off the UO campus in the 10th and Mill building, 360 E10th St #202, less than one block from the 11th and High stop on the EmX line.

Job duties include: meeting with staff to help develop story ideas; writing articles; using various online resources to compile “Class Notes” and “In Memoriam” listings; post stories to the OQ website and maintain the site; contributing to social media posts; producing OQ email newsletters in the content management system; assist the staff with proofreading and layout review; and assist as needed with other functions of the magazine. The assistant sometimes does similar work for other publications within the Oregon Quarterly family.

Successful student assistants are skilled writers and communicators, creative yet detail oriented and accurate in their work, curious, independent, and willing to take thoughtful initiative, comfortable with website systems such as drupal or WordPress, committed to agreed schedules, and flexible in the face of changing priorities.

Experience Required/Preferred

Required qualifications: proven experience writing for a print or online magazine or website; college-level journalism training; writing portfolio; ability to attend weekly editorial meetings and work on site in the OQ office; at least two references who can speak to the applicant’s writing ability and character.

Preferred qualifications: third year or higher in the School of Journalism and Communications, including grad student status; experience editing other writers for publication; knowledge of Chicago style; experience in creating blog posts with graphics and photos; experiencing in creating web pages; writing and production of email campaigns.
