OPB seeks a reporter to work collaboratively with our political team producing stories for digital and broadcast media, following regional politics and policy and tracking policy development, potential corruption, and upcoming political leaders. This is a non-exempt, full-time, regular status position with benefits.

Position Details

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

The Political Reporter/Producer works with editors and OPB’s politics team to provide comprehensive coverage of the important political and policy news for our region on digital and broadcast platforms. This reporter focuses attention on state government agencies and efforts where policy is developed and implemented. They watch for corruption in government, track major policymaking efforts, and develop deep knowledge of current and future political leaders.   

Working Conditions:

This position will be based in Portland and will require regular travel to Salem and occasional travel throughout the region. They will work in the field, in the office, and at a digital workstation. The position may occasionally require evening or weekend work and will require flexibility during key political times such as elections.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • At least two years of reporting experience.
  • Experience with investigative reporting techniques
  • Understanding of the people, places, and key stories affecting our region.
  • Thorough understanding and deep commitment to the Society of Professional Journalist’s code of ethics.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain sources.
  • Ability to provide reporting for audio and digital platforms.
  • Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with reporting colleagues and editors.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Enthusiasm for the role of public media in a changing journalism environment and a passion to change with it.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Political reporting experience.
  • Experience with Freedom of Information Act requests (FOIA).
  • Photography or video production skills.
  • Ability to deliver news live on the air.
  • Relentless attention to detail.
  • An eye for diverse voices and sources in stories.
