Willamette Humane Society (WHS) is looking for a rising communications, public relations or marketing student to join our team as a Communications Intern. This position will support all aspects of WHS’s strategic communications efforts, including public relations, marketing, and social media. We are looking for individuals who have excellent writing skills, are passionate about animals and eager to learn about nonprofit communications.

The Communications Intern will play an essential role in WHS’s public relations and marketing efforts, which means hands-on experience managing communications for a large non-profit organization. Interns will have an opportunity to hone their writing, media relations and research skills, as well as get creative with photography, videography and graphic design. We are also excited to offer a flexible work schedule and the ability to work remote for the right applicant. This is an unpaid position based at our shelter in Salem, Oregon. The ideal applicant will be available at least 10 hours a week and have access to reliable transportation.

WHS provides compassionate services to pets and people in Marion and Polk counties – more than 500,000 animals since the organization was founded. Our core focus is on the animals in our immediate care with sheltering, adoption, as well as medical and behavioral rehabilitation. Other programs and services include education for children in school based programs and summer camps; behavior and training classes for people and their dogs including volunteers and shelter dogs; a low cost spay and neuter clinic and more.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Communications Intern will work alongside the Communications Manager to execute all aspects of the organization’s strategic communication plan. The position plays a vital role in maintaining our organization’s presence in the local community, as well as promoting the programs and services that WHS has to offer. The Communications Intern will support the following, as well as other duties as assigned:

Craft content to use across WHS’s many communications channels, including social media posts, blog and news articles, press releases, newsletter copy and more

Support media research and outreach efforts, including monitoring news and trending topics, maintaining media lists, etc.

Manage the organization’s social media presence, including content creation, planning and community management, in collaboration with the Communications Manager

Capture WHS’s story through photos and video to use across various platforms

Assist in the production of WHS’s monthly e-newsletter and quarterly print magazine

Support in monthly and quarterly reporting to measure program success and contributions to the organization as a whole

Spearhead industry research and support the development of program recommendations

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The successful applicant is a junior, senior or recent graduate with a major in one of the following areas of study: Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism or a related field. We ask the Communications Intern be able to commit to a three-month internship program (an average of 10 hours a week) with the opportunity for extension. Other required skills include:

Excellent written and oral communications skills, as well as a keen eye for copyediting and AP style  

Proficient with the Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suites

Well-versed in all things social media and community management

Familiar with popular web applications and content management tools, including WordPress, Google Analytics and Hootsuite

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage various projects at once

Comfortable working with and around animals. Successful applicants have demonstrated an interest and enthusiasm for animal welfare

PREFERED EXPERIENCE

Previous internship experience in communications, marketing or public relations

Previous experience working in a nonprofit or animal-focused environment

Past experience in media relations, including building and maintaining media lists, crafting media outreach material, etc.
