Dates of position: Winter Term; and/or Spring Term (preferably both terms)

Time Commitment:    8-12 hours per week (determined by intern and supervisor).Required to hold regular office hours and attend a weekly staff meeting. 

About Springfield Public Schools

Springfield Public Schools (SPS) is located just 15 minutes from the University of Oregon campus in the growing town of Springfield. SPS has 20 schools, 1,300 employees, and teaches nearly 11,000 students. SPS enjoys partnerships with the University of Oregon and Lane Community College.

Responsibilities:

Research and write briefs for Internet and Intranet publication.

Assist with web and social media development.

Author news releases and perform media outreach.

Author emails for distribution to community and staff members.

Assist with the planning and implementation of the nationally recognized Gift of Literacy program.

Represent SPS at community events.

Other duties as assigned.

Skills

Candidates must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong organizational skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Professionalism and the ability to work with confidential information are important skills. Knowledge of the web and experience using Adobe products, especially Photoshop and InDesign are also welcome in potential interns. Applicants must provide a résumé and work samples.

Learning Opportunities

This unpaid internship includes many opportunities to work with both internal and external audiences, help develop communications plans, and to assist the Communications Department in the day-to-day running of a dynamic communications program. Past interns have found that spending two terms in Springfield Public Schools allows them to get more involved and help lead long-term projects. Upon successful completion, the candidate will receive a letter of recommendation and portfolio materials. Interns will have the opportunity to enhance their skills and work on long-term projects. This is an excellent learning opportunity for the right college student to assist with the organization and planning of a district-and-community-wide communications plan. Interns work in a pleasant office setting located in the historic SPS administration building.
