Honolulu Civil Beat has an opening for a digital producer who can help take our storytelling in new directions. This is a new position, created with an eye toward better integrating multimedia into our daily efforts as well as our enterprise and projects.
We’re looking for a creative thinker who isn’t afraid to try innovative ideas and new tools as we strive to engage readers in what can too often be flat newspaper-style stories rather than highly produced pieces better suited to the vibrant multimedia world we actually live in.
We want someone who can combine snappy video, engaging graphics, striking visuals, intriguing audio and incisive text into work that readers will grab on to and learn from.
The ideal candidate will be fluent in social media, and capable of creating content that will have a strong presence on all social platforms.
This is a great gig for someone who wants to combine the sensibilities of reporter, videographer, multimedia producer and graphic designer.
We’re looking for someone who has experience editing audio and video as well as knowledge of Photoshop, Final Cut, After Effects, Adobe Premier, some HTML/CSS skills and has experience working in a CMS.
Ideally, candidates will have at least one to two years professional journalism experience, or are recent grads who have had significant internships. Civil Beat strongly values a diverse workforce and encourages people from minority communities to apply. A familiarity with Hawaii and its unique local culture strongly preferred.
That said, we’re willing to consider great canidates who may not have every skill on our ideal checklist. But you must have a clear idea of what you want to do with the wide open opportunities that Civil Beat offers for journalists who are serious about making a difference.
You’ll be part of a small but thriving nonprofit newsroom where stories range from breaking volcanic eruptions to multipart investigations of police corruption. Reporters, photographers, podcast and multimedia producers work closely together in a collaborative and constructive environment.
We offer excellent pay and benefits, including 6 weeks PTO and an employer-matched 401k. It’s a happy, healthy workplace in one of the most beautiful parts of the planet.
