The Center for Public Integrity’s Pulitzer Prize-winning environment and labor team is seeking a reporter for “Carbon Wars,” an ongoing investigative project on the fossil-fuel industry.

This is an ideal position for a journalist eager to take his/her career to the next level by doing data-driven, in-depth reporting on subjects ranging from public-health and climate risks to political influence. The reporter will write for our website, www.publicintegrity.org, and for distribution through our many digital, print and broadcast partners — among them USA TODAY, The Washington Post, NPR, NBCnews.com, Slate, Salon and the Huffington Post.

Research and write investigative stories on the fossil-fuel industry’s activities and influence

Assist with acquiring, cleaning and analyzing data central to major stories

Collaborate on longer pieces with other team members

Compile documentation to facilitate fact-checking

Work with broadcast outlets to produce radio or TV versions of written stories

Write shorter enterprise pieces as warranted


At least five years of professional journalism experience

Computer-assisted reporting background a plus

Strong writing skills

Experience covering the Environmental Protection Agency and climate change

Adept developer of sources inside and outside of government

The Center for Public Integrity was founded in 1989 by investigative journalist Charles Lewis. We are one of the country's oldest and largest nonpartisan, nonprofit investigative news organizations. We are also the winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting and the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for explanatory reporting. 

Our mission: To serve democracy by revealing abuses of power, corruption and betrayal of public trust by powerful public and private institutions, using the tools of investigative journalism.
