KLCC FM 89.7 and NPR member station, located in Eugene, Oregon has a new and unique Diversity Journalist Fellowship Program for an aspiring journalist who seeks to hone their skills while working in a dynamic local newsroom. The Fellow will work full-time for 12 months as a contributing member of the award-wining KLCC news team in Eugene, Oregon. Fellows will acquire a greater understanding of public radio and extensive experience as a broadcast journalist. Under the guidance of award-winning journalists, the Fellow will produce news reports and features. The KLCC Diversity Journalism Fellow will cover topics associated with diversity, including race, access, class differences and culture and how they apply to such topics as education, arts, healthcare, government and the environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
• Produce quality features and news reports for KLCC.
• Engage with the community to report on people, issues and places.
• Create regular reports for web and radio that reach diverse population.
• Participate in news room and station duties as needed.
• Produce a KLCC Community Conversation about a topic uncovered producing stories.
• Work a 40-hour work week for one year. Projected to start in October 2018.
TRAINING The Fellow will work alongside KLCC reporters and staff. Training will include an introduction to the business of public radio and include exposure to:
o Public radio
o Journalism ethics
o Writing for radio and web
o Audio producing
o On-air skills
o Research and information gathering
o Social Media
o On-air fundraising
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS • Knowledge, sensitivity and/or understanding of regional diversity issues. • Academic training in journalism preferred. • An interest in and passion for public media. • A bachelor’s degree. Excellent verbal and written communication; computer (PC) and organizational skills are required to successfully perform in KLCC’s fast-paced, multi-platform news organization.
