AFS Intercultural Programs

AFS USA is seeking an energetic and creative Volunteer to ensure that communications within the Pacific Cascades (OR) area team is being developed, implemented and evaluated in ways that are consistent, coordinated, and targeted to team priorities while supporting and extending National efforts. The volunteer will also ensure that the AFS Branding is being shared with and utilized by local volunteers and that local forms of marketing are planned and utilized to help the area meet and surpass yearly goals.

AFS, a worldwide, nonprofit organization, has been leading international high school student exchange for 65 years.  Each year, AFS-USA sends more than 1,100 US students abroad, provides approximately $3 million in scholarships and financial aid, and welcomes 2,300 international high school students who come to study in US high schools and live with host families.  More than 5,000 volunteers in the US make the work of AFS possible. 


Collaborate with Team Leadership, TDS (if applicable) and AFS-USA Marketing and Communications to assess local marketing and communications needs and create a marketing and public relations plan for the Team to support Team’s sending, hosting and volunteer development goals

Responsible for sharing quarterly updates with Team and AFS-USA Marketing and Communications

Ensure adequate publicity to attract volunteers to become involved and aware of the full range of AFS volunteer opportunities available.

Maintain & update a local calendar of events

Build and maintain Team website in cooperation with the National Office

Use knowledge of AFS Branding

Work with local print, radio, cable television, and internet media on local stories about volunteers, returnees, students, educators, etc

Time Required: 3-5 hours per month

Responsible to: Volunteer Team Chair

Flexible and willing to step in and provide hands-on assistance as needed

Able to work independently and remotely

Strong communication (verbal, written and in person)

Strong organizational skills

Ability to effectively work with diverse populations

Ability to prioritize and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

Strong decision making skills

Additional Job Requirements:

Access to personal computer required

Knowledge of and ability to ensure that all activities and materials follow AFS brand guidelines, policies and procedures

Working knowledge of web pages, social media, wiki, etc
