SMART (Start Making a Reader Today)

SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) is a nonprofit literacy organization that engages community volunteers to read one-on-one with PreK through 3rd children who need reading support and one-on-one adult attention.

This unpaid internship is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with marketing communications in a nonprofit environment. The intern will work at the SMART office in downtown Portland with the Communications Director and gain practical experience in the day-to-day activities of a dynamic, statewide nonprofit organization. This internship may count for college credit as the university or college allows.

Responsibilities: Complete various marketing communications activities, including: Research Social media strategy and implementation Media relations Internal communications Special event planning and promotion Volunteer recruitment Marketing collateral development

Work closely with Communications Director on all activities. Take direction on assignments and work collaboratively to develop, edit and refine materials.

Work remotely with staff members in SMART areas throughout Oregon.

Desired Qualifications and Skills: Ideal candidate will have: Relevant area of study/degree. Some marketing communications experience. Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Strong writing and proof-reading skills.

Availability: Immediate need and ongoing throughout the year. The position length and time commitment is flexible.
