The Marketplace@Sprout! Operations Intern(s) are vital to the planning and operations of Marketplace@Sprout!, a year round farmers’ market located in downtown Springfield. Intern(s) work closely with the Market and Events Coordinator to support the provision of a weekly farmers’ market that serves over forty vendors and thousands of local consumers. The Marketplace@Sprout! Operations Intern(s) will learn the many facets of farmers’ markets operations including vendor recruitment and relations; coordination of weekly market entertainment and educational opportunities; volunteerrecruitment and management; customer support services and administrative duties relating to financial reporting and economic impact studies.

Essential Duties:Marketplace Operations-  Process vendor applications for management review, including tracking contact info, fee status, and designation.-  Enter collected Marketplace evaluation data on a weekly basis.-  Populate market day reporting on a weekly basis.-  Document volunteer hours on a weekly basis.-  Work with Market Coordinator to develop and/or prepare market day materials for distribution.

Workshop & Event Planning-  Brainstorm, organize and coordinate the implementation of market events.-  Identify and contact potential collaborative partners for tabling activities and/or demos.-  Organize and schedule workshops on subjects that relate to local food promotion; to be conducted at Market.-  Recruit, schedule and maintain contact info for Market musicians and other entertainers.

Info Table and Marketplace Operations-  Set up and tear down Marketplace info table on each market day.-  Assist with set up and tear down of weekly Marketplace activities.-  Process electronic transactions, including EBT, debit and credit cards.-  Accurately record and track information related to market day transactions.-  Provide customer information about the Marketplace, local growing seasons, vendors, and NEDCO.-  Solicit customer participation in email list, surveys and other Market day activities.-  Conduct hourly crowd counts, support other data collection efforts as requested.

Requirements (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):-  Proficiency with general office technology (PC, copier, phone, fax).-  Comfort in communicating clearly with a diverse group of people.-  Ability to engage potential shoppers and/or vendors in discussions about Sprout! programs.-  Ability to facilitate initial contacts with local businesses, organizations, and individuals.-  Understanding of the value of events and workshops within the market.-  Proven ability to conduct oneself with professionalism and communicate clearly.-  Ability to document and report progress toward measurable goals to Marketplace and Events Coordinator.-  Ability to clearly and accurately report logistical details of events.-  Experience maintaining composure and tracking details, while working with the public.-  Confidence and proficiency in handling money and managing electronic transactions.-  Ability to handle the physical demands of the position including standing or sitting for hours at a time and lifting up to 50 lbs.

Qualities and Experiences Desired, but not required-  Experience in outreach, publicity, or event planning-  Knowledge of local growing seasons and agriculture.-  Interest in local agriculture, community and economic development, local food systems, and revitalization of public spaces helpful.
