The News-Times and Hillsboro Tribune have an exciting opportunity for a full-time sports editor. The News-Times is an award-winning weekly covering schools Forest Grove, Banks and Gaston in western Washington County, as well as Pacific University. The Hillsboro Tribune is a weekly newspaper covering schools in Oregon’s fifth-largest city, as well as the Hillsboro Hops minor league baseball team. The sports editor coordinates sports coverage for both newspapers, their websites and social media.
In this role, you will primarily cover high school sports, take photos and coordinate the efforts of our part-time sports clerk and full-time photographer. You will be responsible for working with our design desk and for posting stories to our website and social media outlets.
The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in journalism and at least one year of sports reporting experience, demonstrating excellent time management skills and an ability to write engaging, accurate sports stories that do not need substantial editing. Although you will work with a professional photographer, you must be able to shoot sports photos. You will use social media to share your work and engage our audience, work well on deadline, and demonstrate the ability to manage a flexible work schedule that includes evenings and weekends.
The Pamplin Media Group offers a competitive compensation package, including paid holidays, vacation, health and dental benefits and a 401k plan.
Please email cover letter, resume, references and at least three samples of published work, including photos, to Nikki DeBuse, publisher, email@example.com. Put “Sports Editor” in the subject line.
