The Cottage Grove Sentinel, the preeminent weekly news source for Oregon’s beautiful southern Willamette Valley, seeks an engaging, versatile reporter to lead and augment its sports/community events coverage.
The Sentinel has been a trusted source of timely and accurate insight into the people and happenings of Cottage Grove and surrounding communities for well over a century. Ours is a quintessential timber town that’s re-imagining itself as a destination for outdoor recreation and wholesome small-town living, and the newspaper prides itself on a local focus paired with a broader perspective on the issues of our time.
The Cottage Grove area boasts a packed schedule of fascinating events every summer, so the newest member of our news team will want to start meeting the community’s key players and developing contacts right away. While the primary responsibility of the position is the production — including reporting, photography and page design, in addition to social media output — of a weekly sports section, the qualified candidate will also function as a face of the newspaper in the community and a source of live coverage of many of Cottage Grove’s key events.
The Cottage Grove Lions battle for success on the field and on the court in the 5-A classification’s highly competitive Sky-Em League. Our new reporter will showcase the exploits of the area’s teams, including adult and youth sports when feasible.
Requirements of the reporter position include strong writing, photography and layout skills, in addition to the drive to bring our coverage to new avenues via social media. A bachelor’ degree in journalism or a related field or commensurate experience is preferred. Experience with Photoshop and InDesign a plus.
Application materials should include a cover letter explaining the contributions you can personally make to the Sentinel team, an up-to-date resume and recently published clips. They can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org with ‘sports reporter position’ in the subject line.
