Food for Lane County

Responsible To Ted Purdy, Youth Farm Coordinator

Length of Internship:  March 1-October 31st; 2 full days/week

Intern Stipend: $2,100 total

The FOOD for Lane County (FFLC) Youth Farm is an innovative program that addresses the root causes of hunger and malnutrition by promoting community and individual self-sufficiency. Youth, volunteers, and adult interns work with staff to grow food for FOOD for Lane County, our CSAS and our markets. They also work with low-income teens who participate in a Summer Leadership Program at the farm and gain job and life skills, and learn about gardening and nutrition. Adult interns participate in all activities at the farm, and receive training in taking on a leadership role.

Internship Education

The intern will receive education and training in composting, soil science and fertilization, propagation, orchard management, crop rotation and farm mapping, winter gardening, greenhouse construction and management, irrigation, cultivation and weed management, pest management and food relief. Other farm related subjects will be presented depending on interns’ interests. The educational program will consist of lectures, field trips, hand-outs, literature review and mostly hands-on learning.

Internship Tasks:

Participating in all maintenance tasks on the farm: seeding, watering, planting, harvesting, weeding, field amending

Working with adult volunteers and groups on garden maintenance and special projects

Assisting with farm stands, including set-up

Skills Gained:

Interns will gain skills and experience in small scale agriculture, working with youth, marketing produce, leading volunteers and community building.  Interns may specialize, as their skills and interests become apparent.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience in organic farming/gardening and outdoor work

Interest or experience in working with youth and community members

Good social skills

Organized and reliable

Available on Tuesdays and Thursdays
